NRIs who are Indian citizens can be enrolled on the electoral roll in their constituency of origin. Here's how — and why it matters beyond just voting.
Indian citizens living abroad retain the right to vote in Indian elections, provided they are enrolled on the electoral roll of their constituency of origin. The Representation of the People (Amendment) Act, 2010 extended voting rights to NRIs, and the process for enrollment has been simplified in recent years.
The Voter ID card (officially the Electors Photo Identity Card, or EPIC) is accepted as proof of identity and address by many Indian government authorities. It is also accepted as proof of Indian citizenship in some contexts. For NRIs who have surrendered their Indian passport but retain Indian citizenship, the Voter ID card can be a valuable identity document.
NRIs can apply for enrollment on the electoral roll using Form 6A, which is specifically designed for overseas electors. The application requires a copy of the Indian passport and proof of the address in the constituency of origin. The application can be submitted online through the National Voters' Service Portal.
