The ration card is more than a food subsidy document — it's a proof of residence accepted by banks, courts, and government offices. Here's how to manage yours.
In Kolkata, the ration card issued by the West Bengal Food and Supplies department is widely accepted as proof of residence. Banks, courts, government offices, and utility companies all accept it. For residents who don't have a passport or driving licence, it is often the primary identity document.
West Bengal issues several types of ration cards: the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) card for the poorest households; the Priority Household (PHH) card for households below the poverty line; and the Non-Priority Household (NPHH) card for households above the poverty line. The type of card determines the quantity and price of subsidised food grains available.
New ration card applications are submitted to the local Fair Price Shop dealer or directly to the Food and Supplies office. Required documents include proof of residence, identity proof, and a family photograph.
Name corrections, address changes, and additions of family members to an existing ration card require an application to the Food and Supplies office with supporting documents. We handle ration card corrections and transfers for clients who need to update their records.
