Operating a business in Kolkata without a KMC trade licence is illegal. Here's what you need, how to apply, and how to renew it every year.
A KMC trade licence is a mandatory licence issued by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation for any commercial establishment operating within the KMC limits. It is separate from GST registration, professional tax registration, and any central government licences. It is specifically a municipal licence confirming that your business premises comply with KMC's zoning and safety regulations.
Any shop, office, restaurant, clinic, school, factory, warehouse, or other commercial establishment within KMC limits requires a trade licence. This includes home-based businesses if they receive customers or employees at the home address.
For a new trade licence application: proof of ownership or tenancy of the premises; identity proof of the proprietor or directors; proof of business registration (if a company or LLP); a site plan of the premises; and a no-objection certificate from the landlord (if rented).
The application is submitted to the relevant KMC borough office. A KMC inspector visits the premises to verify compliance. Once approved, the licence is issued for the financial year and must be renewed annually.
Trade licences expire on 31 March each year and must be renewed before 30 April to avoid a late fee. We handle both new applications and annual renewals for our clients.
