Spelling Mistake on Your KMC Birth Certificate? Here's How to Fix It

A single wrong letter in your name can block a passport, visa, or property transfer. The correction process is straightforward — if you know the steps.

The Problem With Name Mismatches

A birth certificate that says "Mohammad" when your passport says "Mohammed" seems trivial. Until it isn't. UK Visas and Immigration, the Indian Passport Office, and banks all require documents to match exactly. A single spelling discrepancy can trigger a rejection, a delay, or a demand for additional proof.

Name corrections on KMC birth certificates are one of our most common requests — and one of the most straightforward to resolve, provided you have the right documents.

What Counts as a Correctable Error

KMC will correct: spelling mistakes in first name, middle name, or surname; incorrect date of birth; incorrect father's or mother's name; incorrect address at time of birth. What KMC will not correct: a complete name change (this requires a separate legal process); corrections that contradict the original hospital records without supporting evidence.

Documents Required

To correct a name on a KMC birth certificate, you will need: the original birth certificate (or the entry number if the original is lost); at least two supporting documents showing the correct spelling (passport, school leaving certificate, Aadhaar card, or voter ID); an affidavit from a notary public confirming the correct details; and identity proof of the applicant.

Timeline and Process

Standard name corrections typically take 4–6 weeks from submission to issuance of the corrected certificate. The application is submitted to the relevant KMC ward office, reviewed by the Birth and Death Registration department, and approved by the ward officer before the corrected certificate is issued.

Can This Be Done Remotely?

Yes. We handle name correction applications for NRI clients worldwide. The affidavit can be executed at an Indian consulate or high commission in your country of residence, or through a notary public with an apostille stamp. We prepare the full application package and handle all KMC visits on your behalf.
