There are three different ways to register a marriage in Kolkata. The right one depends on your religion, your timeline, and what you need the certificate for.
Marriage registration in Kolkata can be done under three different legal frameworks: the KMC Marriage Registration system, the Special Marriage Act 1954, or the Hindu Marriage Act 1955 (for Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, and Jain couples). Each produces a legally valid marriage certificate, but the process, timeline, and acceptance by different authorities varies.
KMC maintains marriage registers for marriages solemnised within the KMC area. This is the most commonly used route for Kolkata residents. The application is submitted to the relevant ward office with: marriage invitation card or photographs of the ceremony, identity documents of both parties, age proof, address proof, and two witnesses. Processing time: 3–6 weeks.
The Special Marriage Act allows any two people to register a marriage regardless of religion. It requires a 30-day notice period (during which objections can be raised) and is administered by the Marriage Officer at the Sub-Divisional Magistrate's office. This route is often used for inter-religious marriages or for couples who want a civil registration independent of religious ceremony. Total timeline: 6–10 weeks.
For UK visa applications and OCI/PIO matters, the UK Home Office and UKVI accept all three types of certificate, provided they are apostilled. For Indian passport name change after marriage, any registered certificate is accepted. For property transactions, the KMC or Special Marriage Act certificate is preferred.
