Inherited a Kolkata property with years of unpaid tax? Or simply lost track of payments while living abroad? Here's how to resolve it — and what the penalties are.
Property tax arrears in Kolkata are extremely common, particularly for NRI-owned properties. The owner is abroad, the property is either vacant or rented out informally, and the tax bills go unpaid for years — sometimes decades. KMC charges interest on overdue amounts, and in extreme cases can attach the property.
KMC maintains online records of property tax dues. You can search by the property's assessment number (also called the assessee number). If you don't have the assessment number, we can obtain it from KMC's records using the property address.
Once you have the full statement of arrears (including principal and interest), you have two options: pay in full, or apply for a payment plan. KMC does offer instalment arrangements in some cases, particularly for large arrears. We negotiate on behalf of our clients and arrange payment.
If you believe the property has been incorrectly assessed (resulting in a higher tax than is appropriate), you can file an objection with KMC's Assessment department. We handle assessment challenges and have successfully reduced tax liabilities for a number of clients.
WhatsApp us your situation. We'll give you a clear, honest assessment within 24 hours.
