OCI Card Application from Kolkata: Which Documents You Actually Need

The OCI card is the most important document for Indians living abroad. Getting the Kolkata-specific documents right the first time saves months of delay.

Why OCI Applications Get Rejected

The Overseas Citizen of India card is one of the most valuable documents an Indian-origin person living abroad can hold. It grants lifelong visa-free entry to India, the right to work and study, and property ownership rights. Yet OCI applications are rejected at a surprisingly high rate — and the majority of rejections come down to documentation errors, not eligibility issues.

The most common problem for applicants from Kolkata is the birth certificate. The Indian High Commission or Consulate requires a birth certificate that is machine-readable, issued by KMC (not a hospital), and matches the name exactly as it appears on the applicant's foreign passport. If your birth was registered decades ago, the certificate may be handwritten, faded, or contain a name that doesn't match your current legal name.

The Kolkata-Specific Documents

For applicants born in Kolkata, the OCI application typically requires: a KMC-issued birth certificate (digitised, with QR code if possible); proof of Indian citizenship renunciation or surrender certificate; marriage certificate if the surname has changed; and in some cases, a school leaving certificate or matriculation certificate as supporting identity proof.

The Name Matching Problem

This is where most Kolkata applications run into trouble. A birth certificate that says "Mohammed" when the passport says "Mohammad" — or "Chatterjee" when the passport says "Chatterji" — will trigger a rejection. The solution is either a name correction on the birth certificate (if the certificate is wrong) or a statutory declaration explaining the variation (if both spellings are legitimate).

We handle both. We assess which route is faster and more reliable based on the specific discrepancy and the applicant's timeline.

How Long Does It Take

Assuming all documents are in order, the OCI application itself takes 8–12 weeks at most High Commissions. The Kolkata document preparation — obtaining or correcting the birth certificate, getting it apostilled, and preparing the supporting bundle — typically takes 3–6 weeks. We can run both processes in parallel where possible.
